Why hydroponics

The plant tells you nothing. The reading does.

In soil, a plant sits in a buffer that forgives a week of inattention. In water there is no buffer: the strength of the solution and how sour it is decide everything, and both drift. That is a hard lesson in an unusually honest form, because a class that stops measuring watches the result within days.

It is also the version of growing that fits a school with a corridor and no ground, which is most of the urban schools we talk to.

One channel of greens

A leafy crop from seedling to canteen in a single channel, with the solution logged twice a week and topped up to a rule the class writes.

Strength and sourness read every other day for a fortnight, charted, and the pattern explained. When did it move, and what had the class done that day?

Water against soil

The same crop, half in the channel and half in a tray of soil. Growth measured weekly, and water used measured too. The answer is rarely the expected one.

The training behind it

This is the most equipment-dependent of the growing skills and the least demanding to teach, because the system enforces the routine: miss the readings and the class can see what happened.

We train the mixing and the meter first, since those are the two places a teacher feels exposed, and the crop calendar is planned against the school year so a harvest does not land in the middle of exams.

Equipment is bought. Capability is built.

A channel or a set of buckets, net pots, a small pump, nutrients and a meter. It is the one growing skill with a real shopping list, so we scope it against what the school will actually keep running. CBSE's CSL equipment list is explicitly "suggestive", adoptable per readiness (Circular Skill-13/2026, 20.03.2026).

Does it need power all day?

A small pump on a timer, and in the simplest builds none at all. We size it so a power cut is an inconvenience rather than a lost crop.

What happens in the holidays?

It is planned for in April. Crops and start dates are chosen against the school calendar, and the simplest systems tolerate a fortnight unattended.

Isn't this expensive?

It is our most equipment-dependent growing skill and we say so before you commit. We will tell you if a tray of soil would teach the same thing at your school.
